To answer all of the E-mail questions YES I will have the M21-AIM at SHOT. I will be running it on my AR-pistol that I use to demonstrate my other product so if you would like to come shoot at some really awesome Dry-Fire targets and get an up-close look at the M21-AIM come to booth N517 and say hello!

Just found this thread and finished catching-up.

I'm also very interested. Even in a beta if you want testers!  Wink

@007Bond

They aren't for sale yet, i'm self funding this project which is why the development slowed a bit. Expect an update in the next 2-3 weeks, I'm waiting on parts to assemble the latest version.

Don't want to rain on Phillysteak's parade but...

another forum member is working on a similar design:

So since SHOT I have been running a Beta test with the other M21 users in my close circle. Since there was only one prototype in existence I opted to keep the device local. The feedback from 3 months of testing:

  • Brightness needs to be increased
  • Battery life using the coincell batteries is too short
  • Physical buttons are a must

To increase the brightness of the device a larger battery is required, I opted for a CR2 cell which are readily available and generally used in camera gear; rechargeable lithium versions are also available. These batteries will provide up to 160 Hours of on-time per cell when set at maximum brightness. The battery compartment can now be accessed through an O-ring sealed cover rather than the cam-lock style I originally had. I added a large on/off button and two brightness adjust buttons. The light sensor points upwards now for correct readings and will ensure that the M21-AIM doesn't turn on when you are in a well lit area to conserve battery power. Once the device is powered on you will not need to use the power button except when putting the M21-AIM into long-term storage.

This design is currently on the 3D printer and I will hopefully have a working prototype before the end of the month. Once I check to ensure this version solves the issues listed above I am going to put several together for a limited Beta test outside of my personal network:

P.s. - @larryz  - Not really raining on my parade, I'm glad he is taking the path of a cost effective version. Looks like he just wired up a Piranha style while LED to a battery, if you don't care about having a 3D printed housing on your firearm then go for it. Since the Tavor is my primary defensive weapon I am much more interested in having something rugged.

Phillysteak527's design is much more advanced than mine. I just like to solve problems and enjoy designing stuff. My design is simple. I plan to put a pressure switch on the forehand so you can press it if you need illumination. Nothing sophisticated. No dimming or ambient light snesing.

Clearly your design is more complex.  I like the lower-profile form factor on the front rather than the side.
I experimented with a hardwired blue led taped to one of the collectors with electrician's tape -- worked like a charm.  Proof of concept that it doesn't have to be fancy to do the job...
