To all:

My final config. A drop in 20 gauge that works. No dremeling, no mods... nothing, zip, nada. You follow the exact set of instructions that come with the kit right out of the box. Feed it ammo, clean it, wash... rinse.. repeat.

WHY? It is easier to handle, has far less recoil, and with the right ammo won't shoot through 2 walls. Oh, and did I mention that it is just plain fun to shoot (ladies love it and kids too)!

HOW? You might ask. It turns out that a Wingmaster 870 20ga with serial number ending in "X" OR "M" is a drop in replacement for any modern 870 12ga.  They have standard size receivers and 12 ga mag tubes. (See attached photos).

This is a follow up to my original post and one other - links:

Range ready 12ga ( with lots of stuff hanging off it) http://bullpupforum.com/index.php?topic=2525.msg38344#msg38344
Light weight 20ga (after lots of dremeling and mods) http://bullpupforum.com/index.php?topic=2527.0

Build notes:

1.) The barrel has been shortened to match the length of the +3 mag extension (it's just over 19.5in now).

2.) Kept the iron flip up sights. Ditched the red dot. Kept the laser.

3.) MAGPUL MOE K grip in photo but I like the Ergo Sure Grip too.

Take a look....

Regards,

DJ Miller

(edit: No the barrel is not bent - it may look like that due to an optical illusion caused by camera angle, the taper of the barrel, and a slightly misaligned mag tube. It shoots POA with sights set using a laser boresight.)

Can you tell me what the clearance is between the end of the barrel and the mag extension?  Is the mag extension a prerequisite to do the drop in mod?

Clearance between the barrel and mag extension is 0.50 inches. The barrel length is cut to match the length of the extension (makes it about 19.5").

A magazine extension is not required for this to work. It does require a standard size receiver and 12ga mag tube.

Regards,

DJ Miller

(additional note: I used a Wingmaster with a plain, non ribbed, barrel.)

This is nice! I may have to try to find one of those guns. I have a stock here but no 870. This could let smaller framed people (women and kids) shoot a bullpup.

Thanks for the info!

Would the Express Magnum 20 gauge fall in the drop in category?  I am really interested in doing the conversion however need to know if its going to be a lot of work or bolt on.

I know there are some 20 ga receivers that are the exact specs/footprint of the 12ga.
But I think they are older (...don't quote me on that...)

I'm not sure about the one you're talking about...

The gun is at least 15 to 20 years old.  It has EL on the barrel however I do not know if my dad swapped barrels or not as he passed away in 2000.  Can't seem to find any way to de code the serial number on the frame. It is A238541U.

 My serial number is A238541U

S-68, T-74, V-78, W-84, X-90, A-91, B-94, C-97, D-01, AB-05

Model 870 LETTER SUFFIX (DESIGNATES GAUGE)

So if I want to use this setup I will need to modify the rear mounting plate?

Sorry for the late response... must have missed your post.

I am almost certain your gun won't work as a drop in mod. A great deal of work would be required.

What brand bullpup stock are you using for the 20 ga drop in 870?
