Some AUG's in the wild, one of which appears to be sporting a modified Manticore Shell deflector

Maybe it is a Manticore one. But I don't think so...

I'm sure several homemade ones are floating around.

Like the one below.

Here is my Steyr, with the 20 inch barrel. I also have a 16 inch barrel. Both barrels have a Ratworx TR-1A rail in place of the foregrip. I have a tactical light attached to the diagonal siderail on the receiver, and a 1-6x StrikeEagle with an illuminated reticle.

Only downside to this setup that I can see is the lack of BOIS, but let's be honest, the probability of my needing BOIS is relatively low.

You can mount a CMR-206 Green laser to the rail in front of the foregrip as a backup / night sight. At $130, about the cost of a BUIS, and a lot more versatile.

My new A3 just picked up yesterday. 16" barrel with 1.5x optic. In research mode now for a good case made for this length gun, muzzle device, sling, and who knows what else. I am not good at leaving things stock lol.

I use this case for my 16" A3 M1, good for leaving an urban apartment discreetly and going to the range.

My 20 inch barreled sweetheart.  I definitely need to go to a 1-4 or 1-6 optic on this.  I wasting its potential with a red dot.

This is right after I installed Pete's newest rail.

I agree with your probability assessment.  Sometimes I think people over-prioritize the BOIS.  In general, these aren't deserted island survivalist guns intended to be field deployed w/out support for years at a time.   And even if so, an AUG with it's factory optics is quite likely to serve that just fine.

Desertmoon,

I've had great experiences with a Nikon M223 1-4x20mm scope with a point blank reticle (Hope I got that right).

As a mount I've been using the M223 mount.

To add:

Desertmoon, if you want to see a picture of mine with the scope, go to page 6 post #104.

The nice thing about duracoat finishes is when you get bored with them, just sand them down a bit and re-shoot it with a different pattern or color.  This was the second go-round I did on my Aug.  It came out better than the "professional" job I had done a couple years ago on my USR.  I am getting ready to re-do that one, digital camo again, but maybe a "ghost" pattern of greys or greens.  Note the cut on the front of the 2020 rail required to clear the M4-2000.

Wow...!

Didn't set up the pic, but here's my #2 AUG M1 (2nd of 3). The M145 is silly, but the eye-relief is awesome as is the glass (and BDC).
