Yeah when anticipation gets too much I order stuff ear marked for the MDR.

So far: 3,000+ rounds .308 (600 Fed Gold Medal Match, 400 rounds 168gr Amax,  200 rounds Hornady 178gr Eld-x, 100 rounds each 150gr Superformace SST and Interbond, 160 rounds 150gr Hornady American Whitetail, 1000 Armscor 147gr FMJ, 500 PMC 147gr FMJ) hopefully enough of a volume and cross section to give her a good testing.

A bunch of Lancer Mags, new sling, and a pelican case.

I've been stocking up for the MDR too - Sling, reloading equipment, 200 rounds already set up for a ladder test (hope I did it right because it's my first time and it was a lot of work), Lancer mags, I just ordered a new VX-6HD and am hopefully going to get a Bobro mount for it soon.

Not to mention my wife's lightweight AR I'm collecting pieces for.

I canceled my order just over a year ago in .223.  When they announced that the .308 was going to be released first and then everything went south quickly, I pulled my order - just could not afford to lose $2000.  The project seemed to be in trouble.  When recently checking on LE pricing and was told that .223 was going to be awhile and zero plans for the 9mm, I was glad I cancelled my order since those were my two primary calibers of need.  So I purchased an X95 instead in 9mm.  Will see what pans out with the MDR in .223.  I am encouraged by the MDR .308 - the gun looks solid, really well built. BUT will need to see far more in production and an accurate .223 before I am willing to plunk down $2K+.  May just purchase an X95/.223 and a Tavor 7 in 300BLK - both together would be roughly equivalent to the cost of the MDR .223 and 300BLK conversion.  Time will tell.

The weight gain really put me off as well as the question mark of when the 6.5 creedmoor would be released so I pieced together this guy. I didn't cancel my preorder, but at this point it's got to REALLY impress me for me to keep it.

Great looking build, I  have a few questions for you:

1.) Total weight?

2.) How do you like the Smoke Composite stock?

3.) Groups with the poof?

Seeing the build with the carbon fiber barrel, I thought about the discussions of having one made for the MDR and one thing came to mind:  Would the reduced weight negatively alter the rifle's balance to the point where some of the ease of use disappeared?

It isn't a Proof barrel it appears to be a Christensen Arms

Naked my total weight was 6.25 lbs... as pictured it’s 10 even.

Smoke Composites is probably the best company I’ve ever dealt with, seriously. I went with their “short pull” stock and added on the buttpad. If you go with that stock for a large frame build make sure you email them and request their “spring retainer” with the closed end. The stock is beautiful in person and saved me some weight. Only thing I had to different with it was get lower scope rings than what I usually use on an ar style rifle.

As noted by steelviper my barrel is indeed the Christensen 20in rifle length 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. I got such a good deal on it I couldn’t justify going for the proof... also comparable proof is heavier. Lightest option would of been the Faxon 18in but that’s 308 only I believe (2a armament also has one but it is also made by Faxon).

Apart from zeroing and shooting out a couple hundred yards I only shot for groups once. My four five shot groups were from .75 to 1 inch at 100 yards. That was with the Hornady 129 grain whitetail stuff. It was all I could get before heading out.

That's a fine piece of work! Incidentally, your lightweight 308/6.5CM build list is what put me onto the 2A Balios Lite - Thanks!

Quasi-lightweight - I'm most likely going with a full-mass bcg but all other major components will be light. Faxon pencil barrel at 11.5", tailhook mod 2 as soon as it's available. Haven't decided if I'm willing to spend the extra on little bits like titanium takedown pins. Easy enough to upgrade those in the future if desired.

I was going to build a ar10 with the 2a receiver set.  Then I remember how much I hate the rear charging handel. LOL

My wife's AR is finished but for optics and an eventual suppressor. I decided I wasn't going to wait for the Tailhook mod 2 and went with a mod 1 instead. The sling is non-adjustable and not really made for an AR, but in this case, aesthetics trumped functionality. It works well enough and she loves the look.

Did you machine the forward handguard?  That is really, really nice.  Congrats on turning something that's "one of many" into something truly unique.

I sort of thought that, but I get my nose smacked with a rolled up paper when I assume around here.  ;-)

Haha, you got me. It's for my imaginary wife so I can feel better about myself for making a girl gun.

P.S. Because this is the internet: I'm joking, it's for my real wife. I think I did have more fun building it than she will shooting it. She's not really into guns, but I'm trying to entice her.

Thanks a lot! I wish I could take credit for the handguard, but all I did was the duracoat. It came from offhandgear.com.
