Title: Need Help Identifying AUG Bolt Carrier.
Post by: mg34_dan on January 10, 2018, 02:30:58 PM
I have had this funky bolt carrier for some time and have yet to identify it.  It has large diameter recoil rod holes and fits a full auto stock.  It has no serial number or any other markings.  The carrier body is blued and not parkerized.  Also, the carrier body has no upper rear hump or roller and seems to be lightened.  Any ideas about what it is?

I spoke with Pete about it a couple days ago.  Offhand, he did not know what it was and suggested I post pictures of it here.

Don't know what it is but I want it. How much? =P

Also if you don't mind my asking, where did you acquire it?

It is not for sale and I don't remember where I got it.  I would assume I go it on eBay years ago as I have found some very rare pieces-n-parts there.  I have found a WWI US 30-06 Vickers feed block, lock, and barrel there.

Bizarre.  Maybe it is Malaysian?  Or call Steyr.

Perhaps it is from the Long discontinued TPD ( AUG clone )?

I tired to send them a message via their web site.  My message was rejected from submission. I've never seen that before.  Oh well...

I just received the following information from an Austrian member 'Kersey':

Hi Dan,

I noticed that you had put up a question long ago about a Steyr AUG bolt carrier that you pictured and wanted to know more about.

So from one AUG owner to another I thought that I help you on the way.

These skeletonized carriers are as far as I know very early bolt carriers from Steyr STG 77 army guns.
Why the design change of then new versions I can only speculate but I would think, more steel more weight, lower cycle rate and more reliable feeding when stripping a cartridge from the magazine into the chamber.. Another might be more easy to manufacture.

In Austria what are controlled parts are not the receiver but the barrel and the bolt.
There was no serial numbers on STG 77 Army guns receiver or bolt carrier for a long time.
That's why you don't have one on the this or many other STG 77 receivers or bolt carriers, only the barrel had as far as I know a requirement to have a serial number.
