Title: Best Ammo for the M17S 5.56
Post by: Desert Kraut on May 23, 2017, 01:45:38 AM
I am still awaiting the delivery of my M17S  and was wanting some input as to what ammunition you all have been using and which gave you the best accuracy results. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Every barrel is different, and requires node testing.  IF you don't reload, the only way to do it is to buy match ammo and test till you find the best.  Below is a list of results compiled from myself and Molon of the better match ammo available, should give you a place to get started and a shopping list:

.223- GECO 55gr Target 1.2" $.35/r.

5.56- Mk. 262 Mod 1 1.1" $1.06/r.

.223- Federal Fusion 62gr 1.004" $.862/r Gold dots almost as good (including 64 & 75gr $.75/r), Fed Tactical bonded better $1.50/r.

5.56- Black Hills New 75gr Match 1" $.92/r.

.223- Fiocchi 77gr Exacta .995" $.78/r

.223- Nosler Custom Competition 77gr OTM .98" $.964/r.

5.56- IMI razercore 77gr otm .95" $.747/r.

.223- Hornady 75gr Steel Match .95" $.44/r (55gr not much worse 1.3" $.34/r) Will not cut barrel life.

.223- Prvi partizan 75gr Match .91" $.525/r.

.223- Cor-bon 69gr Match .88" $1.10/r.

.223- Austrilian Outback 69gr SMK .86" $.65/r.

.223- Hornady American Gunner 55gr HP .85" $.55/r.

.223 Noveske 55gr Nosler Varmagedon .82" $1.10/r

5.56- Barnes Precision Match 85gr OTM .81" $1.24/r

.223- Stillwood Ammo 77gr Sierra TMK .8" $.86/r.

.223- Hornady 53gr Superformane Varmit Vmax .70" $.799/r

.223- Federal Gold Medal Match 69gr .67" $1/r (2590fps avg), 77gr also recommended $1.10/r

.223- HSM 55gr Berger Match Flat Base .64" $1.47/r.

Ammo that hasn't been tested but might be decent:

Lapua 55gr and 69gr.

Prime Ammo 55gr and 77gr Match+

Monolithic Munitions 40gr and 60gr Gold.

Atlanta Arms 77gr TMK.

Copper Creek 77gr loads.

Wow, hell of a good resource! Any chance you have data on .308 loads as well?

Thank you Potss. Your reply exceeded my expectations by a mile. The list will be a great resource for me to get started. I have used some of those in my AR but have a different twist rate on the M17S I have coming and wanted to get an idea of what was working for others. With a new gun, the journey will be fun.

I do not have much data for .308 yet.  I can tell you my Tikka T3x CTR in .308 will print ~1/2in groups with 168gr FGMM.

As for twist, it doesn't effect accuracy as long as the projectile is properly stabilized, and the M17s will stabilize all projectiles on the above list so no need to worry.  I highly encourage you to post your results in 5x5 or 3x10 format so they can be compared with the data above!

Sadly, I'll be waiting for my M17S 308 for some time yet.

Potss - in your post, are you implying that all those groupings were from an M17S rifle? Or are those just averages gathered across a variety of rifles?

Those are specifically averages from 3d ARs one with a Krieger barrel, and 2x with Lothar Walther barrels.

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying!

The best accuracy I have gotten is with a Sierra 53 grain Matchking over 25 grains
of Varget and  CCI #400 small rifle primers. It gives 1" or slightly under at 100 yards consistently. I have never shot any factory ammo with it. Never played
the Arfcom 5x5 or 10x10 game.

Dogslayer you should play the game!  I think we'd all really love to see a bullpup finally up on the challenge, and it would generate a lot of positive buzz for the M17S I'm sure :).

Dogslayer, just wanted to confirm you used an AUG with those loads for those results and the factory trigger? 16 or 18" barrel?

Thanks

Correction, m17s. Yes, I see that's possible now.

If there is a forum member that lives in Arizona, I would be glad to have him shoot
my M17s at the Globe/Miami gun club to see for himself the accuracy
of my M17s in person.

There is a new forum for Arizona firearm enthusiasts. The URL is ArizonaShooting.ORG
The old forum went Tango Uniform a couple months ago. Lots of the same people who were  long time
members have showed up on the new forum.

Thanks for the info on the loads you are using. I do not reload but am quite happy with the accuracy of my M17S. I was considering the MDR in 5.56 but didn't have the patience to wait for it to come out. My second choice was the M17S. After reading all the trials and tribulations people on this forum are having with the MDR, I am thrilled to have made what I believe was a great choice. I am currently saving my pennies for the .308.

You're welcome. The loads that have that accuracy in my rifle probably won't give you the same
results. If you want the utmost accuracy your rifle will deliver you will need to find a friend that
does reload and find an accuracy node specific to your rifle. I will usually try at least 10 different
combinations, some times many more to get the best results. My Tikka .22-250 tried my
patience like no other. Finally found a combination of bullet, powder and amount of.powder
that goes into 1/2"'or better all the time. You might want to try reloading, it's cheaper than buying
Factory ammunition and you can tune it to your rifle. I've been reloading since 1983, yeah I'm an
old fart but still enjoy shooting targets and the occasional Coyote. Speaking of which, I need to give an
old friend a "hall pass" to get his ass out from work and do just that.
