Bullpup History:  FAMAS

FAMAS stands for Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne.
Roughly translated as "Assault Rifle from Manufacturer of Arms Saint-Etienne".
The Manufacture d'armes de Saint-Étienne (MAS) was a French state-owned manufacturing company located in the town of Saint-Étienne, France.
It has since been merged into the state-owned Nexter (formerly known as GIAT Industries).

MAS designed Bullpup prototypes from the early 1950's
with the FAMAS project beginning in 1967, and producing the first prototype in 1971.
The french military adopted the FAMAS as the standard combat weapon in 1978.

Improvements continued culminating with the G2 in the mid-1990's, and stands as the French standard military weapon today.

In the late 1980's, Century Arms imported a few FAMAS rifles into the US.  The semi-auto imported rifles were called MAS.223.
Of the reported 100-or-so US imports, an occasional one will pop up in the gun auction sites, selling in the neighborhood of $8000-$12,000.
